Alert: Zoom has renamed AI Companion to ZoomMate, and nothing on the page says so

Zoom has renamed AI Companion. It is now called ZoomMate. We confirmed this on Zoom’s own product page on 8 September 2026: the page is headed “Meet ZoomMate, your AI teammate” and the site navigation carries ZoomMate throughout.

It is the same product. Nothing we rate about how Zoom handles your meeting data has changed, and our rating has not moved.

What makes this worth an alert

The rename is silent. We looked specifically for wording along the lines of “formerly AI Companion” and there is none on the product page. The old name survives only in an image filename and a support-article web address — places a customer never sees.

So if your business wrote AI Companion into an AI policy, a procurement record, a staff guideline, a client disclosure or a supplier register — and many did, because it was the name for two years — you now hold a document naming a product that appears nowhere on the vendor’s website, with nothing to tell you it is the same thing.

That matters in three ordinary situations. Someone new joins and cannot find the tool your policy names. An auditor, insurer or client asks which AI tools you use and your list does not match your invoice. Or you go looking for the vendor’s current privacy terms and search for a product name that no longer returns them.

What to do, and it takes about ten minutes

  • Search your own documents for “AI Companion” — policy, induction material, your AI tool register if you keep one, and any client-facing disclosure. Update the name and note the date you changed it
  • Do not rename it in dated records. A note written in March that says AI Companion is a correct record of what you called it in March. Change what is current, leave what is historical
  • Check what your plan actually includes. As it is now sold, the free tier gets a metered ZoomMate Basic and the fuller capability is a paid licence. Worth knowing which one your staff are actually using
  • Check your vendor list for the same problem elsewhere. A rename is one of the cheapest ways for a supplier record to go quietly wrong, and nothing announces it

What we have not established

We do not know the date Zoom made the change, and we are not going to guess one. There was no announcement on the product page and we have not found a dated notice. If you know when it happened, tell us and we will record it.
